SHSAT

I taught a class of 130 students on Zoom this summer! It was awsome! Here are some reactions!

Sophia Lin

i really enjoyed this class and the format it was presented in. For me, I learn and retain much more through an online class. Mr.Gregorys lessons were very detailed and clear and easy to understand. the experience of this class was nothing but positive. the homeworks and mock tests were reasonable and made me feel more prepared for the shsat test i will be taking in two years 🙂

SHSAT, got into Stuyvesant

Mr. Greg is a great tutor, he is always very patient whenever I don't understand something and after each session, I understood everything I had trouble with before. He is the main reason I got into Stuyvesant.

SHSAT, got into Brooklyn Tech

Our son wasn't getting what he needed from group tutoring at another tutoring center. He wasn't scoring well on the practice tests and had pretty much given up on getting into a SHSAT school. With just 6 weeks left until the actual test, we hired Gregory for one on one tutoring. Gregory gave our son the confidence he needed and got him back on track. Our son scored high enough on the SHSAT test to get into the school of his dreams. We owe our sons success to Gregory and are forever grateful!

One thing that I enjoyed about the class was that Mr. Gregory has everything organized very well and he knows exactly what to focus on so there would be more time to spare in class.

I liked that Mr. Gregory would occasionally crack some jokes to make the class more interesting and fun. I also enjoyed his technique of teaching and his way of solving problems that were simpler and less complicated than I thought they would be.

Hey Gregory!Yes, I did receive some feedback from the students! I’m condensing the responses based on the form, followed by a quote from a student…hopefully it’s detailed enough. Overall, the students really liked you! Hope what I summarized is comprehensible

What you did good on: đŸ˜ƒ

1. Explaining the material“[One thing I enjoyed about the class is] That he explained the questions very specifically and if you still don’t understand he will repeat until you understand. He is a very nice teacher.”

2. Teaching method was straightforward, no dillydallying.“One thing I enjoyed about the class was that it was very straightforward and informative, allowing us to understand our mistakes to the fullest extent and guiding us through solving the problem in a clear manner.”

3. Added a spice of humor when teaching.“I liked that Mr. Gregory would occasionally crack some jokes to make the class more interesting and fun. I also enjoyed his technique of teaching and his way of solving problems that were simpler and less complicated than I thought they would be.”

4. Organized and prepared.“One thing that I enjoyed about the class was that Mr. Gregory has everything organized very well and he knows exactly what to focus on so there would be more time to spare in class.

“FEEDBACK đŸ˜‰

1. Pace of explanation.“An improvement could be going at a pace that is comfortable for all students, if a bit slower or faster, and going over the topics the students want to study most even more.”
2. Time management. â€œThe time spent for explaining each problem could be used more wisely. Sometimes questions that most of us understood would be explained for a long time and ones that needed more elaboration would be too short. Maybe he could ask the class first on specific questions or concepts that were part of the test that we had trouble with.”

3. Get a white board, you’re wasting a lot of paper.“He wasted too much paper”

Hi class!

obviously we have the 2019 DOE :

https://www.schools.nyc.gov/docs/default-source/default-document-library/2020-shs-handbook—english73ede72622e242c9b65d68bcf7c5df68

This is the link LeapUp recommended:

https://study.com/shsat/shsat-practice-tests.html

This is Princeton review, it’s just like Kaplan’s and Barrons (maybe better than Barrons, that was pretty awful!):

https://www.princetonreview.com/k12/free-shsat-practice-test#!practice

This seems to be a compilation of the original tests! I really would recommend using this for a week now. As you witnessed, the quality of the other practice material that is not made by the SHSAT itself, is just not very good (too easy/too hard/incorrect.) Just remember some of the ELA section formats are different now (google it). There are a few sections that just don’t exist anymore so don’t waste you time practicing scrambled paragraphs etc.

Use these mainly for the reading comprehension and math.

I tried to take an exam and then just submit and then go back later but it wouldn’t let me quite the exam (before I filled everything I guess?). But it does say at the beginning that you can take the exam 999 times. So wouldn’t worry about the time unless you want to be timed. You can probably just do one section and go back later.

Here is the Argo prep (pretty sure it’s the same one) that we did some of. I thought it was very good, although some questions were slightly too hard and included some things that are not even on the actual SHSAT (to scare you into paying for tutoring.)

https://argoprep.com/store/?filter=1330%2C

I really wouldn’t try anything except:

Princeton Review, Kaplan (that’s what we did already), Barrons (groan), Pearson doesn’t seem to have any SHSAT, and the links above. If you get really bad material (of which there is plenty!) by trying other weird sources, it can completely mess you up.

If any of you guys feel like writing me a two or three sentence recommendation for MATHBUMP that would be greatly appreciated and particularly awesome!

Please send your two or three sentences to: [email protected]

Thank you it was great.
